Dr. Barcena is a native of Colombia. He graduated from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. He completed residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at University Hospitals / Case Western Reserve Universityin Cleveland, Ohio. He completed additional training in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. Dr. Barcena holds Board Certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology. Dr. Barcena specializes in General Cardiology treatment and prevention with a particular interest in heart failure, complex valvular heart disease, pericardial disease and pulmonary hypertension.

I am so upset I wish there were more stars to click on because 5 stars is not enough for Dr. Barcena. Wow wow wow and wow is the best way i can describe my experience with Dr. Barcena and his staff is just amazing at the Coconut Grove Office that will be closing soon and moving to Coral Gables office. Dr Barcena truly was the answer to my prayers during a period of complete desperation for me. I was 44 years old and went to Baptist ER for chest pain and I was diagnosed with a 4.8cm ascending aortic aneurysm and was told that it needed to grow to 5.0cm or a little more before surgically getting it fixed. I was referred to a cardiologist and just told be careful if the aneurysm was to burst you would be dead before hitting the floor. I saw 3 different cardiologist and they all ordered a CT Scans to measure the aneurysm and its location. They all gave me different sizes and locations where I had the aneurysm. Having a life threatening diagnosis and all these doctors giving me different information made me so scared that in a month I visited several emergency rooms looking for answers. I prayed with all my faith and then I found Dr Barcena and he knew exactly what to do. He ordered a procedure to be done by his partner Dr Erwin ( who is amazing as well ) he made my experience in the cath lab just amazing. Imagine having a doctor looking at the inside of your heart with a camera while listening to Daddy Yankee La Gasolina it was actually a cool experience. Dr Barcena gave me the results he took me off half of the medications I had been prescribed and helped me tremendously to learn to cope with my anxiety and most of all has given me the tools to better understand my diagnosis and take care of it and continue living a normal life. I has been two years now and he continues to closely monitor my situation and I just don't trust any other doctor with my medical care. Dr Barcena always greets me with a smile and a hug and never makes one feel that you are being rushed out of the exam room to bring in the next patient. God placed Dr Barcena in my path and there is just no better doctor that I would trust my life to. Great team of professionals that genuinely care for each patient with individualized compassion and focus. During hurricane Irma and after, Dr. Barcenas and office staff coordinated Mothers care with the utmost finesse. They where key in discovering a new primary diagnosis which put us on the Right path towards recovery. Mom is very Grateful after several years of suffering and mishandling. Highly recommended.
My mom saw Dr Barcena when he was at another location in 2015. My mom had severe aortic stenosis and because of her age and autoimmune disease no cardiologist would refer her for surgery. Dr. Barcena was the only one that referred her to the surgeon and my mom had aortic valve replacement in 2015 with Dr Lamelas. She's been doing great and recovered well. We are so thankful for Dr Barcena and his thorough evaluation of my mom. Sadly, my mom has to go to another cardiologist because of her insurance. But we recommend Dr Barcena 100%
