Phillip Erwin, M.D., Ph.D, F.A.C.C.

Dr. Phillip Erwin is an interventional cardiologist with special expertise in the treatment of coronary artery disease and valvular aortic stenosis. Dr. Erwin founded the transcatheter aortic valve program at South Miami Hospital and is the Director of Complex Coronary and Structural Interventions at the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute at South Miami Hospital.

Dr. Erwin’s procedural skills include cardiac catheterization (primarily done from the wrist, the most minimally-invasive approach), low-contrast procedures for patients with chronic kidney disease, providing interventional alternatives to cardiac surgery in patients with reduced heart function, use of Impella and other advanced circulatory support devices in patients considered too “high risk” by most interventional cardiologists, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

In addition to his large referral practice and valve clinic, Dr. Erwin enjoys practicing general cardiology and helping to prevent coronary disease before it starts.

Originally from New York City, Dr. Erwin attended Harvard Medical School where he earned his MD and a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry. He then completed internal residency training at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital. His training in cardiovascular medicine was at New York’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine under Dr. Valentin Fuster.  He then pursued an additional two years of advanced training in coronary, structural, and vascular intervention at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. There, Dr. Erwin served as Chief Fellow and joined the faculty at the end of his training. In addition to his formal training, Dr. Erwin has trained in cardiovascular interventional techniques at the University of Freiburg in Germany.

Dr. Erwin joined our practice in 2016 and sees patients daily at our South Miami office with the same or next day appointment availability. He does procedures at Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital.

Dr. Erwin speaks English, Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole.
