Dr. Lowie Van Assche is an interventional cardiologist with a focus on the treatment of coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease. Dr. Van Assche uses patient-centered, evidence-based treatments for his patients. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and has been a speaker at both national and international meetings.
Originally from Belgium, Dr. Van Assche graduated from medical school at Maastricht University in the Netherlands with honors and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University. He was accepted into the highly competitive physician scientist training program at Northwestern University in Chicago and completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He served as the chief cardiology fellow. He stayed at this top-tier, nationally recognized academic medical center to complete an additional 2 years interventional and structural heart disease fellowship.
This additional training included the treatment of complex coronary artery disease (blockages in the heart arteries that need additional skills and tools to treat) and the use of advanced circulatory support devices (mechanical heart pumps that support the heart temporarily). He also specializes in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for aortic stenosis and MitraClip for mitral regurgitation. Furthermore, he was part of multiple trials studying new transcatheter treatments for mitral and tricuspid valve disease. Dr. Van Assche performs other structural heart interventions such as PFO/ASD closures and alcohol septal ablations for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Dr. Van Assche is an innovator and pushing the field of transcatheter therapies forward. He is the co-founder and chief scientific officer of a transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement device that is currently under development.
Dr. Van Assche joined our practice in 2020 and sees patients daily at our South Miami, Kendall, and Coral Gables Offices with same day appointment availability as well as telemedicine options. He does procedures at Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital.
